VINTAGE FREEZER – Rescue and Refurb

The finished refurbishment on display in the Studio prior to sale.
Converted into kitchen / laundry / pantry storage unit (with metal lined insect and rodent barrier)
The refurbished freezer went to a happy customer who will love it for years to come.
The bright blue paint covered the chrome fittings as well as the original hardwood veneer.
The entire rear section where the gas powered motor and compressor was housed was pulled out, along with all the rotten wooden framing around it.
New Oak framing fabricated and installed to replace the unsalvagable rear section.
Replacement rear frame re-lined with salvaged galvanised metal skin.
Once stripped of paint, surface rot from existing veneers was carefully cut out and replaced with new veneer as close as available to a match.
The overfilled patches were carefully filed down until the transition between old and new was imperceptable to the touch.
Doors being oiled and sealed / trims being repainted back to the original blacking finish
Nearly all brackets, latches, and hinges needed new fixings, springs and pins.
Chrome fittings were removed, disassembeld, stripped, brushed, reassembled, polished and refitted.
Slatted shelving needed to be built to suit the Freezers new incarnation as storage.
Shelving in situ
Blacking edges and internal hardwood flooring.
The final article, minus the bells and whistles.

This 1960’s Gas powered shop freezer was rescued from a fire damaged Bakery in a small country town in Victoria.

When discovered it was partially painted in bright blue thick gloss paint, was extensively damaged by both the fire and rain, and was on it’s way to a bonfire or landfill.
